Distance Education

This week we had to read a few articles in class. One of the articles I read was Open Educational Resources: Enabling universal education. I resonated with this article because when I was in undergrad, I hated online classes because they made me feel that I was not getting the most out of my education. However, as I progressed into my graduate program and as I took online classes, I was able to understand the potential that comes from taking these classes. I am paying to get a piece of paper at the end of my degree, I am choosing to learn.
A few years ago, a teacher told me about free course information and materials that Universities were rolling out and I was able to access them. I was able to learn new information in a direction I chose to go in. For universities to offer essentially free courses online, people will be more informed and more knowledgeable and that is a right that everyone deserve to have.

  1. I never took an online class as an undergrad and I wasn't sure how I would like them now that I'm in graduate school. In some ways, I think I spend more time on readings and assignments than I would if I was taking a F2F class. However, I also like the flexibility and the opportunity to 'customize' my learning. Have you taken advantage of a free online university course? If so, what was it and how did you like it?

  2. I took half my undergrad online do to my work schedule and deployments. I chose to do the same for my graduate school to allow me the flexibility to decide when to work on school work and build it around my time with my family. I will admit that I tend to take training or classes based on whats the end result (i.e. degree, course credit, requirements for work, etc). I have seen some of the free courses offered and found the ones more attractive that combined the courses to end in some type of certificate. It doesn't have to be a big thing but something that shows that you completed a certain number of courses and something that I can use for my work or for future work to show that I accomplished it.
